Morellino di Scansano, is geographically placed on the coast of the south of Tuscany, The Maremma Toscana.
It is one of the most beautiful and uncontaminated parts of the region. This wine production takes place between the Ombrone river valleys and the Albenga river which include, in addition to the vines of Scansano, the Grossetano towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, Campagnatico ... Manciano, all the way to the extension of Monte Amiata.

Thanks to the beneficial influence of the climate, which mitigates its hot daytime summer temperatures with sea breezes and with constant rain throughout the year, the grapes have the best growth and maturation conditions.
Historical sources and documents still preserved demonstrate that the production of  "excellent" wines from the vineyards of this area date back to the Etruscan period, with techniques that are intact still today thanks to their strong traditions. The vines cultivation takes place by keeping them low and not grown in height.
Its origins and its history can be traced back to the Etruscan and Roman period ... however the success and knowledge of this wine is only recent. The award and the prestigious DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) was recognized in 2007.
Grapes must be grown within the province of Grosseto, in the above-mentioned area, and also all the vinification process, from aging to bottling must take place within this area, or at least within 2 kilometres from the border, by companies with the "Certificate".

The Wine

Morellino di Scansano is a versatile wine that is available in many different facets and offers a wide range of products to suit every palate and every occasion.

Morellino used in the production of grapes for a minimum of 85% from "Sangiovese" vines. For a maximum of 15% the use of grape vines to berry / black fruit (non-aromatic ... where it is mainly the traditional practice ... "Canaiolo", "Ciliegiolo", "Malvasia", " Merlot "," Cabernet "...),  is allowed,  recognized and authorized by Regione Toscana.

The "Modus Operandi" of the discipline of this wine requires the use of well-exposed vineyards located in hilly areas with the consequent exclusion of valleys.

The "intense red" colour that tends to "Garnet" with aging, full-bodied and strong character, the "Morellino di Scansano" can be placed on the market for consumption not before 1 March following the year of harvest.
But if we speak of the "reserve", the aging period must be at least two years of which one submitted in wooden barrels.
The aging period is calculated as from 1 January following the year of production.
The bottles of this wine must express the year the grapes were grown.


The "Morellino di Scansano" characteristic is an “intense red" colour that tends to "garnet" with aging, full-bodied, dry, vinous with fruity aroma (cherry, red fruit and plum) and spicy notes; a "fresh" wine, slightly tannic flavor that softens with the passage of time.
It remains pleasant and persistent on the palate when savouring it.

Serving suggestions:

It is recommended to sample the wine at 18 ° C, open at least one hour before consumption (oxygen needed to release the most of its intense aromas and characteristics) in large and capacious glasses.
It is a wine for all types of meals and can be served with appetizers (cold meats and crostini with chicken liver) or first courses with meat sauce ... and thanks to the intense flavor and full-bodied its excellent combination is with red meats (roasts, braised and grilled meats).
It is also great with venison and game; It goes well with risotto.
Also used along with fish dishes of sea bass, red mullet and rockfish.
